When the temps started dropping like a stone in January, I decided that it was time to start feeding the birds on our little balcony.
Little did I know what an adventure it would become — and how quickly and happily The Man and I would slide in to full on “retiree” phase.
It has become such a source of peace and pleasure for us — all for the cost of a bag of seeds.
We are blessed to live in a smallish apartment building that backs up to the woods and has one hell of a view.
Although we’re within city limits, we’ve always felt that the wildlife here was abundant — particularly after living in a major metropolis for most of our lives.
This morning, we woke up to snow here in Richmond — and lots of bird action on our balcony.
This red bellied woodpecker has started coming around and he’s quickly become one of my favorites. He’s very cautious — he just peeks his little red head over the balcony — and has the funniest birdie feet. I love him.
We also see our fair share of blue jays, chickadees, and Carolina wrens. I’m in love with the little chickadees and wrens. The jays are such bullies. Big birds, I guess.
Do you have a bird feeder? Who are your favorites? Let me know in the comments!
Here’s how Mr. Kitty is spending his snow day
Our birdseed investment has been quite the boon for his kitty happiness.

Until next time, readers!
Cabbages and Kings — part of Curd Culture — is a reader supported publication. Thank you for supporting a cheese monger telling my story and sharing my love for Virginia’s history and wildlife.
Love the bird pictures!
The birds of Virginia are one of the great things about living in this state.
