Hi readers!
Last week’s Music Monday was a big hit, so it’s going to be a thing now.
And in last week’s comments, my buddy Jeff and I were talking live performances, and I mentioned one of my favorites, the Concert for George — where rock and roll royalty performed the music of George Harrison one year after his tragic death.
This is probably my favorite version of this song, mainly because Billy Preston makes me feel like I’m at the fun kind of church:
Before he died, I always fantasized about seeing Billy Preston out at the grocery store or something, just being a regular guy who also happened to be the “Fifth Beatle.”
I’d offer to buy him a drink, and get him to regale me with all of his stories from the “old days.”
Because you know he saw some shit.
This poignant and emotional song came from George’s first solo album, All Things Must Pass. The whole damn thing1 is incredible, maybe one of my all time favorites. No wonder he wanted a solo career when he was sitting on all that gold.
The entire Concert for George is worth watching. Tom Petty and Sir Paul make appearances. I had it on DVD and it was a staple for when I had people over in my 20’s2.
You’re not seeing a ghost, that’s George’s son Dhani on the guitar.
Enjoy!

It’s a double disc, too.

Great selection today. Prince was the best.
That was a great concert! As a Minnesotan, my favorite there is Prince's appearance for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Just one more occasion to see what an amazing musician he was.
